Before pursuing writing as a career, I had been telling stories in some capacity as a storyboard artist, director, and animator for television and film, including work on an Oscar-nominated movie. My short stories and poems have been recognized by various publications and competitions, such as Writers of the Future. I have written several novellas and am currently compiling a book of short stories, as well as nearing completion of two novels independent of my Usagi series. For the THREE HEARTS OF USAGI novels, I drew heavily upon my travels to Japan and interviews with a Shingon monk who was gracious enough to share his temple and daily life with me. I have been a Japanophile ever since I first spent a summer on Honshu when I was 16. When I'm not writing, I enjoy modelmaking and illustrating in pen and ink. I'm also an enthusiast of classic war games.
WRITER’S STATEMENT:
My work frequently explores two intrinsically different worlds at odds with one another. This could be a comparison between a grounded, practical life and an enchanted, magical one. Alternatively, it may highlight one’s struggle to adapt in a rapidly changing environment or the clash between new technologies and ancient traditions. Resilience and indomitability are hallmarks of my protagonists, and themes like personal growth, mindfulness, and human connection are always present. Oftentimes, my stories walk the line between realism and fantasy. Characters embark on quests to uncover arcane secrets that will illuminate their current realities.
It is my belief that, whether a picture book, a novel, or a summer blockbuster movie, a good story should transcend all ages, genders, and races, as well as inspire.
