“ORDER OF THE MACHINE”
Curfew is rapidly approaching. Soon the wingless dragons known as saugrons will migrate over the wall into Yerat, and all will have to hide in their dark cellars, biding their time until the monsters are gone. With the Guard increasing its patrols, suspected followers of the outlaw Ishma-Bin are being hunted down and sentenced. When young Dag discovers a rare, bright green bird that talks in cryptic phrases, he suspects the mysteries of the city go deeper than even he realized. And what of the secret brotherhood of falconers who are said to be older than the wall itself? Could they hold the hidden truths of Yerat and what’s on the other side?
Excerpt from the ORDER OF THE MACHINE:
“The old midwife who had sold Dag’s contract to Master Parson had found him in a rubbish heap and had thought him a dog and had so named him Dag because of it. He was only a few months old then. He’d been born the winter the wormtongues came like thieves in the night, stealing away his mother and father. Entire neighborhoods were wiped out and homes abandoned, only to be inhabited by wolves and vultures. It was the same year Constable Cornelius Valentine was executed, before the reign of Lord Alark VII. Master Parson said everyone remembered that year. It was also the year birds were outlawed in Yerat.”
